The first successful live donor kidney transplant in the United Kingdom was performed at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh in 1960, between identical twins. Nowadays, the kidney transplant programme performs 30-40 live donor transplants each year, and 70-80 kidney transplants from deceased donors.
For many people with end stage kidney failure, a transplant increases life expectancy and offer a better quality of life. However, the shortage of organ donors in the UK means that many patients will wait on average 3 years for a kidney from a deceased donor. Live kidney donation offers many advantages, however it involves a fit and healthy person undergoing a major operation. All donors have a rigorous assessment to minimise the short and long term risks to their health.
