Information on measles

We have directed you to this page because during your recent visit to the hospital, GP, or out of hours GP there is a small chance that you may have had contact with a person who has measles.

If anyone came to the hospital or doctor with you (for example, other family members), then you should share or discuss this information with them too.

If you have normal immunity, and particularly if you have had your MMR vaccinations or have previously had measles infection, you are unlikely to become infected after this contact.

If your doctor or nurse has ever told you that you have poor or reduced immunity, or you are currently pregnant, there is a greater chance that you may develop the infection.  In this case please contact the East Region Health Protection Service (0300 790 6264 – Office Hours only) or your own GP and explain that you have reduced immunity and have possibly been exposed to measles infection – the health protection team will then decide if you need further blood tests or treatment.

Measles is an infection that spreads very easily. Symptoms can occur suddenly, and people can become unwell quickly. Vaccination is the best protection from this infection.

There is further useful information about measles on NHSinform: https://www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/infections-and-poisoning/measles/

If you become unwell in the next three weeks

You should speak to your GP (or NHS24 by phoning 111) if you get a high temperature with a cough, runny nose, sore red eyes or rash in the next three weeks.

Tell your doctor that you may have been in contact with someone who has measles. It can be difficult to know when to seek help if you are unwell. If you are worried then you should seek medical help.

Please do not attend the Emergency Department or your GP without phoning first – it is important that you do not mix with others in the waiting room, as you may pass the infection on to others nearby.  If you are unable to phone ahead, please notify the receptionist as soon as possible (and if possible, before you entering the waiting area) that you may have measles.

Vaccination for people who have not had two doses of the MMR vaccine

If you are unsure if you (or anyone else in your family) have had two doses of the MMR vaccine, we encourage you to contact the NHS Lothian Vaccination Enquiries Helpline, 0300 790 6296 who can arrange for you to have the necessary boosters.

There are also drop-in vaccination clinics available around Edinburgh – all are open 08:30 – 18:15 (closed 13:00-13:30).
