Find out more about the vaccine, and when and where to get it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is HPV?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>HPV is a common virus, often with no noticeable symptoms.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most people clear the virus naturally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>However, HPV can increase your risk of certain cancers and can be transmitted to others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>HPV spreads primarily through intimate sexual contact, including skin-to-skin contact in the genital area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Condoms do not offer complete protection against HPV.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HPV-Related Cancers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HPV can lead to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Head and neck cancers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cervical cancer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Anogenital cancers (e.g., anal, penile, vaginal, vulvar)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HPV Vaccine Benefits<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The HPV vaccine protects against most HPV-related cancers and over 90% of genital wart infections.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HPV Vaccination for Adolescents<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Routine Vaccination:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All S1 pupils in Scotland are offered the HPV vaccine as part of the school-based immunisation programme.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The vaccine is administered by the NHS Lothian Community Vaccination Team.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your school will inform you about vaccination sessions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For more information, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhslothian.scot\/vaccinations\/childhood-vaccinations\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2570\">Childhood Vaccinations<\/a> page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Missed Vaccinations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you missed your vaccination at school, opportunities for catch-up vaccinations will be available.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You may be offered a rescheduled appointment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For more information, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhslothian.scot\/vaccinations\/childhood-vaccinations\/#school-vaccinations-anchor\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nhslothian.scot\/vaccinations\/childhood-vaccinations\/#school-vaccinations-anchor\">Missed Childhood Immunisations<\/a> page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eligibility After Leaving School<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you were eligible for the HPV vaccine but didn&#8217;t receive it, you may still be able to get it until the age of 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This applies to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Currently eligible individuals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Boys eligible from the 2019\/2020 academic year<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Girls under 25 eligible under previous programmes introduced in 2008<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HPV Vaccination Schedule Change<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From September 2023, the routine HPV vaccination schedule for adolescents in Scotland was reduced to a single dose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Individuals under 25 who started a two- or three-dose schedule before January 2023 are considered fully vaccinated.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HPV Vaccination for Men Who Have Sex with Men<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The HPV vaccine is available in Scotland for men who have sex with men.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For further information, please visit the GBMSM page on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lothiansexualhealth.scot\/\">Lothian Sexual Health.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Human Papillomavirus (HPV) The human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine protects from cancers and genital warts caused by HPV infection.
