Nowadays, the kidney transplant programme performs 30-40 live donor transplants each year, and 70-80 kidney transplants from deceased donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many people with end stage kidney failure, a transplant increases life expectancy and offer a better quality of life. However, the shortage of organ donors in the UK means that many patients will wait on average 3 years for a kidney from a deceased donor. Live kidney donation offers many advantages, however it involves a fit and healthy person undergoing a major operation.
